Craft brewers from Washington State received four medals at the recent
Great American Beer Festival held October 5-7 in Denver, Colorado. Over 1800
beers from more than 400 breweries across the country were entered in the
competition, the largest and most prestigious in the United States.
Two gold medals went to breweries from the Evergreen State. Doug Hindman of
Elliott Bay Brewing Co. of Seattle received a gold for his Alembic Pale Ale
in the Engish Style (Extra Special) Strong Bitter category. David Hollow of
Humperdinks Big Horn Brewing took a gold medal for the brewery's Murphy's
Dry Stout in the Classic Irish-Style Dry Stout category.
A silver medal was won by the Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Company (owned by
Miller Brewing) of Tumwater, WA for Henry Weinhard's Dark in the
American-Style Dark Lager division.
Brewer Mike Davis and the Harmon Restaurant & Brewery of Tacoma also won a
bronze medal for their Brown's Point Bitter in the English-Style E.S.B.
category.
Some 12 medals were captured overall at the competition by Northwest
breweries in Washington, Oregon, and Alaska. The most-decorated medalist
was Darron Welch of the Pelican Pub & Brewery in Cape Kiwanda, OR, who
received two gold medals for his Golden Ale and Foreign-style Stout as well
as the Small Brewpub and Brewmaster of the Year awards.
